Mould And Damp
TYPES OF DAMP
The three most common types of damp found in homes are: Condensation, Rising Damp, Penetrating Damp.
What Causes Condensation?
Warm moisture laden air is cooled by cold surfaces such as windows and external walls. Once the moisture is on the surface mould spores can form creating black mould. Condensation is caused by moisture which is produced from inside the of your home. There are four main factors that cause condensation:
High level of moisture being produced by modern lifestyle.
Lack of effective ventilation.
Cold surfaces.
The overall temperature of your home.
Condensation Can Cause:
Mould on walls, clothing and furniture.
Streaming windows.
Recurring respiratory infections.
Asthma.
Need for re-decorating.
Black mould
Health consequences of black mould
Mould is cited as a cause of asthma by the NHS and The World Health Organisation. Mould spores are known to cause other respiratory illnesses such as Dysponea, Allergic Rhinitis and Respiratory Infections.
Links have been made between damp in homes and fatigue, headaches and lack of concentration. This is due to the presence of microbes that thrive in the damp conditions. There is ongoing research into the possible link between cancer and dampness in homes due to the inhalation of mycotoxins present in mould. Black mould itself is classified in the same group as Salmonella.
Using effective ventilation, combined with adequate heating has been found to be the most effective way to reduce the moisture content and create an environment where mould cannot develop.
